Lagos, Nigeria
Moshood Jimoh, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, has announced the reinstatement of the security detail of Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Jimoh explained that Meranda’s security was temporarily withdrawn for audit.
TheCable had earlier reported how a senior official in the Lagos Assembly confirmed the withdrawal of Meranda’s security personnel.
“Yes, it’s true. Let people know that this woman did not impose herself on the Lagos House of Assembly. She was elected by 33 of the 40-member house. That is to me an overwhelming majority,” the source said.
“We should ask ourselves: Is it because she’s a woman? Women are also asking the same question. How long do we continue in this tradition?”
Later on the same day, Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached speaker, arrived at the assembly complex accompanied by a group of security aides.
A source within the assembly complex confirmed that Obasa’s security detail was reinstated on Thursday morning.
Speaking to journalists at the assembly complex, Obasa declared that he had resumed his role as the leader of the House and maintained that his removal had not followed due process.
The impeached speaker then presided over a “plenary session” with just four lawmakers in attendance.
Despite the assembly complex being open, the majority of the 40-member state assembly chose not to participate in the session insisting that Obasa had been successfully impeached.
