Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, leader of the Senate, has said the national assembly is working on the establishment of legal frameworks for state police in Nigeria.
According to Bamidele, this move, when completed, will help the country to tackle insecurity
He said this in his Easter message on Sunday.
“While the Authority of the National Assembly is in the process of developing legal frameworks for the establishment of state police as one of the measures to address insecurity in the country, we urge security agencies to work together as a team to track and apprehend all the masterminds and sponsors of terror attacks nationwide,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kamoru Ogunlana, clerk of the national assembly, has announced that both chambers of the legislative arm have extended their resumption from recess by one week.
Senators and members of the House of Representatives commenced their latest recess on March 27 and were billed to return to legislative business on April 29.
A statement on Monday signed by Ogunlana said plenary sessions in both chambers will resume on May 6.
The statement revealed that the earlier resumption date has been shelved to allow lawmakers to participate in the Workers’ Day ceremony and attend to constituency matters.
“I am directed to inform distinguished senators, honourable members, and the general public that the two houses of the national assembly have extended the date for the resumption of plenary sessions from Tuesday, 29th April 2025, to Tuesday, 6th May 2025,” the statement reads.
“This extension allows distinguished senators and honourable members to participate in the Workers’ Day ceremony and attend to other engagements in their constituencies.
“Distinguished senators, honourable members, and the general public are invited to take note of the new resumption date.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.”
