#KnowYourLawmakers: Meet Mr. Ogundeji Iroju; Deputy Speaker of Ondo Assembly

Mr. Ogundeji Iroju was born over five decades ago in Ore town to the family of late High Chief and Mrs. Christopher Iroju of Igodan-Lisa. In pursuant of his political ambition, he voluntarily resigned his commissionership portfolio to contest as a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly representing the good people of Odigbo Constituency I, an election which he won convincingly in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was elected the deputy speaker in 2017, a position he is still holding till after securing reelections in the 2019 Houses of Assembly election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress and also at the election of the principal officers of the ninth assembly in Ondo State.

His Early Life and Education

His father was the Atiborewolu of Igodan-Lisa from the noble Famakinwa family while his mother is from the lineage of late High Chief Labo of Idepe-Okitipupa. Mr. Ogundeji Iroju attended Methodist Primary School, Igodan-Lisa which he completed in 1979. He proceeded to Igodan-Lisa/Okunmo High School and Agbabu Community Grammar School, Agbabu where he sat for his West African School Certificate in 1984 and 1995 respectively. The young Ogundeji burning with passion for education, he proceeded to Osun State Cooperative College, Ode-Omu in 1993 where he obtained a certificate in cooperative studies. He also attended the Federal Cooperative College, Ibadan where he obtained a Diploma in Cooperative Management.

Not satisfied, Mr. Iroju proceeded to the University of Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University) between 1997 and 2002 for his Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy. He also attended the College of Accountancy, Jos, Plateau State which qualified him as a Certified National Accountant. He is a proud member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN).

In 2012, he bagged Bachelor of Law Degree (LL. B) from the faculty of Law, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko and also bagged Masters in Law (LL.M) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He is a fellow of the Institute of Industrialists and Corporate Administrators of Nigeria. He is also the fellow of the Institute of Professional Financial Consultant of Nigeria and of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria.

His Awards

Mr. Ogundeji Iroju as an outstanding personality, he has bagged several prominent awards from different organizations among which include:

  • Award of Excellent Performance by Today’s News, Lagos, Nigeria
  • Meritorious Award for Good Leadership Service by New Era Teachers’ Foundation, Odigbo Local Government Chapter
  • Merit Award as Ambassador of Peace and Progress by CCC, Ore Assembly
  • Award of Excellence by the Methodist Church of Nigeria
  • Award of Grassroots Mobilizer by the National Association of Proprietors’ of Private School, Nigeria.
  • Distinguished Merit Award of Excellence by the National Conference of Bursars of Secondary Schools.

His Political Journey So Far!

Mr. Iroju’s political journey dated back to his election as a Councilor in Odigbo Local Government between 1991 to 1993. He was appointed Supervisory Councilor for Agriculture and Community Development in the same Odigbo local government of Ondo State between 2004 to 2005.

In 2009, he was appointed Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Ondo State on Project Monitoring and Evaluation, the position he held till 2011 before appointed the Head of Direct Labour Agency Team IV, Office of the Governor of Ondo State between 2011 to 2013.

Mr. Ogundeji Iroju was appointed as an honorable Commissioner for Employment and Productivity in 2013 and served as a member of the Ondo State Executive Council (the highest decision-making body in Ondo State).  In pursuant of his political ambition, he voluntarily resigned his commissionership portfolio to contest as a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly representing the good people of Odigbo Constituency I, an election which he won convincingly in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). As a result of his exemplary leadership roles and experience, he was unanimously elected unopposed as the deputy speaker of the 8th Ondo State House of Assembly. The same scenario was repeated at the inauguration of the 9th Ondo State House of Assembly during the election of principal officers after winning reelection on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The position which he is occupying to date.

Mr. Ogundeji Iroju is an international icon who has traveled far and wide and has garner international exposure in various fields.
