Sequel to the clash between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress’s supporters at Oba- Akoko on Wednesday, the Ondo State Police Command had ensured that the eighteen political parties that will be participating in the October 10, gubernatorial election in the state, had yesterday signed a peace accord. The parties promised to be at peace with one another before, during, and after the election.
The peace accord was signed by parties in the presence of the State Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Salami at the state police headquarters, Igbatoro road, Akure the state capital.
Mr. Salami who lamented over the incident that happened at Oba-Akoko charged the various party leaders to warn their supporters against carrying/using weapons during rallies, stressing that anyone caught will face the full wrath of the law.
He said, “I will not sit here and watch people killing themselves. The police will deal ruthlessly with anybody caught with unauthorized guns in any campaign venue.
“So leaders of various political parties should talk to your people because you are brothers”.
He also said the police have carefully arranged the time table for each political party to carry out their campaign without recourse to violence, urged them to follow the timetable to ensure there is no repeat of the Oba-Akoko incident.
Mr. Salami, however, assured the parties of adequate security at the campaign venues across the 18 local governments to maintain peace and order.
While speaking to newsmen, the All Progressives Congress party’s state chairman, Mr. Ade Adetimehin, said the APC will abide by the laid down rules to ensure peace reigns in the state before, during, and after the election.
The State Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mr. Joseph Akinlaja said several peace-meetings had been held in the past and it has not yielded the desired result, he further charged the police to take their responsibility seriously.
The Peoples Democratic Party’s publicity secretary, Mr. Kennedy Perete appealed to the other opposition parties not to take the election as “a do or die affair” but to be seen as a means of fostering the state’s development.
