2023: How Kwankwaso’s NNPP won the Kano governorship election with a wide margin

Abba Yusuf, the gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has been declared the winner of the Kano governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abba Yusuf, the gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has been declared the winner of the Kano governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He defeated Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC), anointed by the outgoing governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The winner, Abba Yusuf is anointed by Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the NNPP and who led the state between 2007-2015.

According to INEC, the NNPP’s candidate emerged as the winner of the election after the end of the collation across 44 local government areas (LGAs) in the state.

The returning officer, Ahmad Dokko Ibrahim, during the declaration of results said Yusuf won the election with 1,019,602 votes, while Gawuna scored 890,705 votes.

In 2019, many Nigerians believed that Yusuf who contested against Ganduje was robbed of victory in a very controversial election, which went into supplementary polls.

At the end of the first election, Yusuf who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) then was leading Ganduje with a margin of 26,655 votes after polling 1,014,474 votes while Ganduje who was the incumbent governor got 987,819 votes.

Supplementary elections were held in 28 out of the 44 local government areas in the state by INEC.

Ganduje eventually emerged as the winner after he secured 45,876 votes while Yusuf polled just 10,239 in the supplementary polls.
