IYD 2019: Group empowers Ondo Youth on Sustainable Development Goals

The Nigerian Youth Sustainable Development Goals in Ondo State has organized a public event in Akure in the spirit of the 2019 International Youth Day to empower young people on the Sustainable Development Agenda of the United Nations. The group is a National Coalition of Youth CSOs and Businesses working to achieve sustainable development goals in their communities.

The Ondo State Coordinator of the group, Mr. Idris Bashiru said the program is being held in over twenty States across Nigeria as a means of fact-finding on what young people are doing on the sustainable development goals and as well, to empower participants and actors with the needed information that would help them to succeed and push their communities forward in line with the SDGs.

Joel Ogunsola, a senior special adviser to the governor of Ondo State on Innovations and Partnerships, who was one of the guest speakers at the program explained the roles of the Ondo State Office on Innovations and Partnership is playing towards building the capacity of young people in the State to ensure they possess the much-needed skillsets for decent jobs and works as one of the crucial factors to eradicate poverty, hunger and driving a robust economic growth.

Damilola Faponle of Kids and Teens, Olaniyan Olawunmi of Rhealyz Africa among other speakers noted that the time for young people to rise up to take ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals has come as Nigeria marches to the year 2030.

The event witnessed a breakout session where participants had the opportunities to discuss pressing issues on various sustainable development goals such as zero hunger, climate action, quality education, gender equality, decent work for all, resilient infrastructures and industrialization among many other goals. Each group was allowed to present issues and initiatives to tackle them before the whole house.

Adebisi Awal, a 300-level mechanical engineering student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, expressed his fulfillment about the opportunity to learn about what the Sustainable Development Goals stood for and how common issues in his community could be tackled. Also, Miss Grace of the National Youth Service Corps serving at the State Ministry of Works, confidently told us that the new knowledge gained on climate action has arisen her desire to volunteer for social works aims at combating climate problems in Nigeria.

While bringing the event to a close, Mr. Idris Bashiru thanked participants and promised that his group would work on how to effectively track community initiatives by the young people.
