#KnowYourLawmakers: Meet Jamiu Sulaiman Maito; The majority leader at ODHA

Mr. Jamiu Sulaiman Maito was born on 5th May 1970. A graduate of accounting and a masters holder in public administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State. He is currently representing Akoko North West Constituency I, emerged the majority leader and chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business in the Ondo State House of Assembly.

HIS EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

He had his elementary education at St. Stephens Primary School, Agbaluku, Arigidi Akoko and while his secondary education was at Ajiroke Technical High School, Arigidi Akoko, Ondo State. He attended the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti where had National Diploma in Accountancy in 1997.

In 2006, he graduated from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State with a Bachelor degree in Accounting and later in 2010 bagged masters in public administration from the same university.

HIS POLITICAL JOURNEY

Mr. Jamiu Sulaiman Maito joined active politics in 1998 and later contested councillorship position and won in 2004. In 2005, he contested a bye-election for the Ondo State House of Assembly when the then incumbent lawmaker representing his constituency was appointed a commissioner in the administration of late Dr. Olusegun Agagu. He was appointed a supervisor for health in Akoko North West local government.

Jamiu in 2007, again contested for the party’s primary for the house of assembly but lost. In 2011, he won the primary election but lost in the general election but was finally elected in 2015 to represent Akoko North-West constituency I at the Ondo State House of Assembly on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Between 2015 and 2019, he served as the parliamentary secretary and the chairman, House Committee on local government and chieftaincy.  He also served as the vice-chairman, House Committee on tertiary education and a member of other House Committees such as public account, OSOPADEC, lands & housing, public utilities, transport, and sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Mr. Jamiu Sulaiman Maito was reelected in the 2019 election for state houses of assembly on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Immediately after the inauguration of the ninth assembly in Ondo State, he was appointed as the majority leader of the House which automatically made him the Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business which is statutory for majority leaders as a core tradition of the house. He is serving in the following House Committees as follow:

  • Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources
  • Vice-Chairman, House Committee on Government House and Protocol
  • Vice-Chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs
  • Member, House Committee on OSOPADEC
  • Member, House Committee on Health
  • Member, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy
  • Member, House Committee on Youth and Sports
  • Member, House Committee on Education and Adult and Technical Vocation

He is happily married and blessed with children.
