TUC gets a new president

Festus Osifo, a registered engineer by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has been elected as the new president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria.

Festus Osifo, a registered engineer by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has been elected as the new president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria.

The returning officer for the election, Shehu Mohammed, said Mr Osifo polled 688 votes to defeat Oyikan Olasanoye, who polled 18 votes, while 22 votes were recorded as invalid.

728 delegates had participated in the election in which he emerged the winner.

NAN reports that the election took place on Wednesday at the 12th triennial national delegates’ conference of the union in Abuja.

Mr Osifo, who is also the national president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), is expected to pilot the affairs of the union for the next three years.

Apart from being a COREN registered engineer, he is a member of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) and Society for Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

NAN reports that the election only took place for the office of the president due to internal disputes that have engulfed the TUC.

Speaking, Mr Osifo during his acceptance speech, said he would fight for the welfare of the masses as well as the protection of the interest of every Nigerian worker.

He added that he would involve everyone in his quest to take the congress to a greater height, adding that he would ensure that placate aggrieved comrades.
