#KnowYourLawmakers; Success Torhukerhijo of Ese-Odo Constituency

Mr. Success Taiwo Torhukerhijo is a seasoned journalist, grassroots politician and lawyer. Born on the 19th of December, 1963 into the family of late Reverend Lawrence Torhukerhijo and Chief Mrs. Victoria Torhukerhijo. Currently, he is the legislator representing Ese-Odo Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Bitumen, Petroleum and Energy at the Ondo State House of Assembly.

HIS EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Mr. Torhukerhijo started his education at the Local Authority (L. A) Primary School, Arogbo, between 1970 and 1975 from where he proceeded to Methodist High School, Okitipupa, between 1975 and 1980. After his secondary education, he taught Mathematics and General Science at Ijaw National High School, Arogbo, between 1980 and 1981 before proceeding to further his education at the Lagos State College of Science and Technology and the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island, Lagos where he obtained an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in agriculture and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in fisheries and oceanography respectively. Mr. Success Torhukerhijo observed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program at the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Ibadan Oyo State from 1989 to 1990. He obtained a post-graduate diploma in journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba, Lagos in 1992 and holds a Masters of Business Administration from Imo State University, Owerri, and a Master’s of Science in Mass Communication from the Ecole Superieure de Management (ESM) University, Cotonou, Benin Republic. His love for knowledge and quest for legal education also spurned him to study law at Nigeria’s premier private university, Igbinedion University, Okada where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL. B) in 2017 and immediately proceeded to the Nigeria Law School, Lagos. He was called into the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on November 2018.
HIS EXPERIENCE AND POLITICS

In 1992, Mr. Success Torhukerhijo founded Community Link Newspapers, a grassroots and household news tabloid with coverage in Ondo and neighboring states. He is also the publisher of Ijaw Star Newspaper, a tabloid with spread across Ijaw towns and communities in the Niger Delta. He has at various times being the chairman, Association of Community Newspapers’ Publishers of Nigeria (ACNPN), Ondo State Chapter and Chairman of Ondo State Swimming Association, among others and he acts as adviser and patron to multifarious organizations.
He was the pioneer political secretary of Ese-Odo local government, an office he held between 1999 and 2001. Before then, he was the coordinator of Ondo State Central Forum, Ilaje/Ese-Odo local government in 1994 and deputy chairman of United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), Ilaje/Ese-Odo local government in 1996. He was a foundation member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ondo State Chapter.
Chief success Torhukerhijo is married with children.

As a Politician, he has great capacity and dexterity to interact with the grass-root people and to mobilize them as he maintains an enviable reputation among the political class in Ese-Odo local government and the old Okitipupa division. He speaks English, Ijaw, and Yoruba fluently and loves to swim. In 1985, he was honoured and conferred with the traditional title of Positariwei OF AROGBO IBE by His Majesty, Pere D. M. E Eperetun Agah II, the late Agadagba of Arogbo Ijaw land.

With quality and excellence as his watchwords, he is an outstanding and well-rounded journalist, politician and lawyer, an intelligent, adventurous, dedicated and skilled leader who takes delight in helping others.

As a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly representing the good people of Ese Odo Local Government in the 9th Assembly, he has hit the ground running with a Categorical Minority Policy (CMP) which is intended to champion the cause of the minority Ijaws (Arogbo & Apoi) in Ondo state for better entrenchment, positioning and considerations in the polity and commonwealth of our dear state and nation.

HIS COMMITTEES IN THE HOUSE

Mr. Success Torhukerhijo is also serving at the various House Committees in the Ondo State House of Assembly which include the following:

  • Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Bitumen, Petroleum, and Energy
  • Vice-Chairman, House Committee on OSOPADEC
  • Vice-Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora
  • Member, House Committee on Urban Development
  • Member, House Committee on Agriculture
  • Member, House Committee on Natural Resources
