As the Saturday Local Government election approaches, the Chairman of Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), Prof. Yomi Dinakin has revealed that the commission has put in place several measures to ensure that the election is a success.
Prof. Dinakin made this known to newsmen during a media brief on the commission’s preparedness for the forthcoming election in Akure.
When asked about the commission’s preparedness for the election, Prof. Dinakin said the commission has been prepared for the election since last year and all necessary provisions were made for the election which was supposed to have come up in April but was later put on hold due to the outbreak of Corona Virus globally.
He stated that the commission in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and some Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) had organized sensitization programs to educate the electorates on the need to exercise their franchise and how to coordinate themselves during the election despite the pandemic. He added that the electronic and print media were also used to educate the people.
Prof. Dinakin went further to say that the personnel that will be helping out in conducting the election were also trained. He added that no personnel will be posted to his local government just to ensure that the election is credible and fair.
The Chairman also stated that the election would be conducted based on the COVID-19 precautionary measures as prescribed by health officials and the government to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic during the conduct of the election. He noted that Social distancing shall be enforced and electorates who have voted shall be dispatched to avoid overcrowding and the spread of the coronavirus. Thermometers, Sanitizers will also be provided across the polling units.
10 qualified political parties out of the 13 political parties that showed interest will be participating in the Saturday election.
