Nigerian workers under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) umbrella have commenced nationwide protests over the removal of petrol subsidy.

The protesters have converged at the fountain roundabout in Abuja and on the Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos.

Last week, NLC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the federal government to reverse all “anti-poor” and “insensitive” policies by the Tinubu administration.

The union also called on its state councils, Nigerians and civil society organisations (CSOs) to join in the August 2 nationwide rally to protest the soaring cost of living in the country.

Efforts by President Tinubu to stop the planned strike and protest failed.

On Monday, the President in a nationwide broadcast begged Nigerians to be patient with his administration.

He also announced some immediate plans of the federal government to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy on Nigerians.
